Djangology!

Posted on Apr 17th, 2008 by Quiche : Nifty Oddball Quiche

My latest SVG creation- Djangology! Jean-Baptiste "Django" Reinhardt (January 23, 1910May 16, 1953) was a Belgian Sinto Gypsy jazz guitarist. He was one of the first prominent jazz musicians to be born in Europe, and one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time. His most renowned works include "My Sweet", "Minor Swing", "Tears", "Belleville", "Djangology" and "Nuages" (French, meaning "Clouds"). His name is pronounced [d????go ?e?n??t]. Read more about him here. Oddly, they did not mention Django's Tiger in the Wikipedia article, which is an amazing piece of music! His left hand was badly burned in a fire at the age of 18, and relearned to play guitar in the hospital with the first two fingers, the other two badly damaged. He has inspired countless musicians of all instruments and genres.

Origami Crane

Posted on Apr 25th, 2008 by Quiche : Nifty Oddball Quiche

For Sadako Sasaki (7 Jan 1943-25 Oct 1955)- x1000, and the power of how one person can make such a tremendous difference. I may yet achieve folding a thousand of them. This is my latest Inkscape SVG offering. It would have been easier to fold one and photograph it, but where would be the fun in that? I had an origami crane to work from, but I didn't care for design of the paper, preferring the traditional Japananese patterned origami papers, so I created my own design, and attempted to reflect the pattern as it would look folded at different angles. I say "attempt" because obviously it would take some really good math and being able to skew the pattern to get the proper direction and perspective of the folded pattern, but I think I "eyed" it convincingly enough. I have a fascination with ornamental patterns, the Grammar of Ornament by Owen Jones, being among my treasured design books. The above link is the full, page by page on-line version.

This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.
